Hoya HD Mk II IRND64 (1.8) Neutral Density Filter 62mm
The Hoya HD Mk II IRND64 (1.8) is a neutral density filter that reduces light to the equivalent of 6 stops. Featuring ACCU-ND IR-cut technology, hydrophobic and oleophobic coating, and a low-profile frame. Density 1.8, divides incoming light by 64 (6 stops). Neutral density (ND) filters are the most in-demand and essential type of photographic filter for several reasons. For photographers, ND filters offer precise control over the amount of light passing through the lens for better creative exposure control. For video content creators, ND filters greatly assist in adjusting shutter speeds to match frame rates while maintaining depth of field. Perfect for panning objects or capturing motion blur. The HD Mk II IRND64 is ideal for controlling movement or blurring subjects, used to create a sense of motion with flowing water, wave movements, or moving people. Without an ND filter and using standard camera settings, movement would appear 'frozen' in the final image. A smooth effect can be achieved by closing down to f/16 or f/22, but this may cause diffraction leading to poor resolution and overall representation. Additionally, when shooting with fast prime lenses and cameras with a lowest ISO sensitivity of 200, it may not be possible to reduce exposure enough to achieve a shutter speed that produces the 'water flow' effect. However, using the HD Mk II IRND64 allows for selecting an appropriate f-stop to avoid 'diffraction' while reducing exposure to the necessary shutter speed required to express movement as 'fluid'.
